What IS “United Methodist Women”
The Purpose of United Methodist Women
United Methodist Women shall be a community of women
whose purpose is to know God and
to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ;
to develop a creative supportive fellowship;
and to expand concepts of mission through participation
in the global ministries of the church.
What does that mean?
Members of Monroe United Methodist Women (UMW) stand with nearly 1 million other women in the global community who are committed to the same purpose as the one printed above and have a passion to change the world around them. Units of United Methodist Women are active in their communities and around the world.
Here in Monroe, United Methodist Women supports women and children served by the Monroe office of the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) by supplying 50 Christmas and 50 Easter gift bags filled with age appropriate school supplies, treats and hygiene supplies. Another 50 gift bags go to Moms for Mother’s Day with lotions, soaps, teas, coffees, hygiene supplies, cookies, and snacks. Just recently, several women have gotten excited about a new mission; providing emergency clothing supplies to DSHS for children in foster care.
For several years Monroe members and the congregation have collected clothing and supplies for newborns and sent them to the Nome Community Center in Nome, Alaska. Where every baby born in Nome receives a set of new baby clothes. Our annual pledge, $1800 for 2011, is paid directly to Women’s Division, which develops and supports international ministries for women, children and youth from the Atlantic Street Center here in Seattle, WA, to the Center for Research & Rehabilitation of Infants & Females based in Madural, India. We are able to reach out and help projects related to women, children and youth in the United States and in more than 100 countries around the world.
In short, United Methodist Women provides opportunities for you to engage in mission, study, personal growth, and social action locally and around the world. We get together to support each other as we walk in our Christian life; we are here for each other because we believe in Faith, Hope, Love in Action and that: Any woman can step up–and ask to be counted–
I belong to United Methodist Women because I believe….
“together we can achieve more and spread Gods love to others by how we live” Elizabeth Coonan
“United Methodist Women does good things through mission” Margo Smith
“educating and empowering women can change the world” Rita D. Stuff
